AtriClamp – an innovative system for closing the left atrial appendage (LAAO)

  • 1.The project scope includes development work. The planned R&D activities aim to successfully implement the project result in the market. The tasks carried out in the project include:
  • Designing and prototyping the medical device: Processes such as material selection, design, sample production, and their mechanical and functional testing are crucial for the experimental development work. These activities aim to create a prototype that will undergo further research and testing for optimization and finalization of the product.
  • Use of advanced technologies: The application of computer simulations using the finite element method (FEM), strength tests, and the development of research protocols indicate the intensive use of technical and scientific knowledge for the development of a new medical solution.
  • Iterative process: Experimental development work is characterized by the need for iterative testing and refinement of prototypes. The documentation states that depending on the research results, it may be necessary to perform several iterations of elements/components, which is typical for the process of developing new products.
  • Preclinical and clinical studies: Conducting preclinical and clinical studies is another step in verifying the functionality, safety, and effectiveness of the developed product. These studies are directly related to the experimental nature of the work, where theoretical and prototype solutions are tested in real-world conditions.
  • 2.The project is intended for use by professionals, aimed at cardiac surgeons performing the LAAC procedure.
  • 3.The aim of the AtriClamp project carried out by Medinice S.A. is to implement a research and development project aimed at creating a clamp, a gauge, and an applicator for closing the left atrial appendage of the heart. Additionally, the device serves as a means of preventing the causes of stroke, which directly translates into a high quality of life.
  • 4.As part of the project, the Applicant plans to develop a process innovation in the form of a production technology for the AtriClamp solution described above.
  • 5.Project value (total project cost): PLN 17,414,110.25
  • 6.Amount of European Funds contribution: PLN 8,707,055.12
  • 7.The project implementation period started on March 7, 2024, and ends on December 24, 2027.

POIR sub-action 1.1.1

  • Project title: EP Bioptom–Electrophysiological diagnostic electrode for endomyocardial biopsy - project co-financed by European Funds
  • EP Bioptom is an electrophysiological diagnostic electrode for endomyocardial biopsy of the heart muscle guided by 3D electroanatomic mapping. Biopsy is a study that allows for morphological, immunohistochemical, and structural studies in electron microscopy. The introduction of 3D electroanatomic mapping (3D-EAM) systems has made it possible to create three-dimensional potential maps that allow for the identification of areas of the heart with pathological electrical function.
  • 3D-EAM systems allow for the creation of 3D-EAM with a potential map reflecting the areas of the border zone, scar, and healthy heart muscle. Additionally, 3D mapping allows for the determination of the conduction system and the vicinity of the valves, which reduces the risk of performing a biopsy from the area of the conduction system/valve apparatus and the associated complications. The appropriate application of this technology allows, among other things, for the precise localization of the arrhythmia source, determination of the 3D geometry of the heart chamber, designation of anatomical areas of interest, and manipulation of the catheter and positioning without X-ray radiation. 3D-EAM systems facilitate mapping and increase the likelihood of procedural success, particularly in complex cardiac arrhythmias and in cases of atypical heart anatomies.
  • The aim of the project is to develop an innovative product on a global scale - a multifunctional electrophysiological diagnostic electrode for endocardial biopsy of the heart muscle guided by 3D electroanatomic mapping.
  • The project value: total expenses: PLN 5,374,650.00, eligible expenses: PLN 5,374,650.00, contribution of European Funds: PLN 1,143,435.00.
